SURJ Rural Organizer Job Posting 

Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) works to undermine white support for white supremacy as part of a multi-racial, cross-class movement for racial justice. SURJ has made a commitment to centering and supporting rural leadership and rural organizing. SURJ is seeking an organizer who can support this commitment by developing grassroots leadership, supporting strategic campaigns and helping to lead the process of infusing this commitment throughout the organization.

The organizer will:

  • Identify and develop strategies to supporting existing rural SURJ leaders and chapters

  • Lead a process to develop and implement a rural base-building strategy within SURJ

  • Identify and support the implementation of organizing strategies and campaigns that are meaningful to and center rural communities

  • Identify leadership development needs and design leadership development opportunities for rural organizing within the SURJ network

  • In partnership with the co-directors, oversee efforts to infuse rural leadership, values and commitment throughout SURJ

  • In partnership with the co-directors, build a team of rural trainers and coaches

  • In partnership with the co-directors, develop strategic relationships with other organizations focused on rural organizing

  • Provide feedback on SURJ’s rural solidarity organizing and fundraising efforts

  • Support the planning and execution of a rural convening in 2017

  • Maintain great data

The successful applicant will have experience:

  • Organizing campaigns led by rural communities.

  • Facilitating groups toward making a vision a reality

  • Training, especially around political education and direct action

  • Designing organizing curricula for rural communities

  • Working with rural leadership from a wide range of geographic regions

  • Engaging in bottom-up organizing, grassroots leadership, and collective decision-making

  • Working and thriving in a virtual work environment

  • Working collectively in teams and resolving internal/external conflict skillfully

  • Communicating effectively, with the ability to represent the organization externally

  • Demonstrating a commitment to racial justice and working in multiracial movements

  • Maintaining a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, and travel (as needed, and in consultation with staff team)

  • Engaging in accountable forms of grassroots fundraising as a key part of strategic grassroots organizing

This is a full-time, salaried position with excellent health and family benefits and paid time-off. Salary range is approximately $45,000-$50,000/year. Relocation is not necessary -- SURJ staff work virtually, and we are committed to ensuring that organizers are able to stay in the communities where they have built relationships and networks.
