National Day of Action: White Silence is Violence

SURJ West Michigan is responding to the call for direct action from the Movement for Black Lives.

We will be gathering at MONUMENT PARK, near the police station on Division and Fulton, for a peaceful demonstration breaking white silence.

Grand Rapids is anxious to annex itself from problems faced in nearby urban areas, but their action is necessary to save the lives of our neighbors. We will not remain silent as police brutality, racial profiling continues unchecked in our society. White silence is violence and we choose not to remain complicit in institutionalized racism. Please join us.

Bring conversation points, questions, movement ideas, signs with Black Lives Matter, Movement for Black Lives-centric and SURG-centric messaging.

Notes for White supporters can be found here:

Maurice Mitchell (Cleveland Based Organizer) "Where there's black leadership, they should be supporting their work or doing complimentary actions. Where there's not, that not an excuse to not act. Do it anyhow. White people's silence and lack of action is why we are in this condition. "
