On August 12, 2017, white supremacists descended on Charlottesville, Virginia, intent on inciting racist violence in that community. When anti-racist protesters showed up to oppose the "Unite the Right" rally, white supremacists attacked -- unleashing violence that wounded many and killed protester Heather Heyer.
Unfortunately, three anti-racist protesters are now facing charges related to the white supremacist violence on August 12. DeAndre Harris, Corey Long, and Donald Blakney are each being prosecuted by Charlottesville Commonwealth's Attorney Joseph Platania -- and local activists are asking the SURJ network to help make calls to his office, calling on him to drop the charges against these three men.
Below is a sample script you can use when you call the office (and remember to remain respectful of office staff in order to build the strongest case possible for dropping these charges against DeAndre, Corey, and Donald):
Call the Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office to speak to or leave a message for Joe Platania: (434) 970-3176
"Hello -- my name is ________ and I'm calling to urge Mr. Platania to drop all charges against Donald Blakney, DeAndre Harris, and Corey Long. Prosecuting these men for showing up for their community in the face of white supremacist terror on August 12th is unjust and unacceptable."
